The Adoration of the Lamb, 19th century, oil on panel. After Albrecht Dürer (14711528). The subject of this work is the Adoration of the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei). In Christianity this is a scene derived from the Gospel of John, who is visible kneeling in the foreground. He is surrounded by a multitude of other figures including angels, prophets, Apostles, and a large group of matyrs and saints recognisable by the palms they are holding. Overhead is the Lamb of God. The artist was inspiried by The Apocalypse which is a a famous series of fifteen woodcuts of scenes from the Book of Revelation by Albrecht Dürer, published in 1498. The series was probably cut on pear wood blocks and drew on theological advice, particularly from Johannes Pirckheimer, the father of Dürer’s friend Willibald Pirckheimer. Work on the series started during 149495 and the set was published simultaneously in Latin and German at Nuremberg in 1498, at a time when much of Europe anticipated a possible Last Judgment in 1500. The series brought Dürer fame and wealth as well as some freedom from the patronage system, which in turn, allowed him to choose his own subjects and to devote more time to engraving. In 1511, Dürer published the second edition of Apocalypse in a combined edition with his Life of the Virgin and Large Passion. Held in a 19th century ornate frame. Albrecht Dürer (14711528) was considered one of the foremost artists of the Renaissance period and his extensive work in printmaking transformed the categorisation of the medium from craft to fine art. Often depicting religious subjects, Dürers woodcuts and engravings demonstrated unprecedented technical skill, tonal variation, and compositional sophistication and his skill earned him the role of court artist for Holy Roman Emperors Maximilian I and Charles V, under whom he created a number of paintings and altarpieces. Dürers series of self-portraits, created throughout his career, represent some of his most iconic works. Measurements: Height 100cm, Width 69cm framed (Height 39.5, Width 27 framed).
