16th Century Religious Embroidered Orphrey Metallic Silk Needlework Saint Angel
Antique Italian Religious Needlework hanging. Dating from 16th century circa 1570. Originally Orphrey Panels from an Important 16th century Chasuble. Bottom panel worked in silk and Metallic threads depicting a Saint below an A central Angel between two mythical winged Griffin. Top panel worked in metallic and silk threads depicting an urn overflowing stylized flowers and scrolling vines. All worked onto metallic silk ground edged with gold metallic embroidered stumpwork borders padded with hemp. Later gold metallic vestment trim along outer side edges. Finished with original hand worked metallic tassel fringe. The hanging is almost four hundred and fifty years old. Is in expected time worn, antique condition and shows appropriate signs of wear/ losses, marks commensurate with great age. Please study photograph as they do form part of the description. A rare Museum worthy textile. From a private English Estate. SIZE 36 inches long including fringe x 10 inches wide.
