The Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus to her left breast; in an oval; below, crest surrounded by wreath, featuring three birds. Print made by Francesco Bartolozzi (1728 – 1815). The engraver and painter Francesco Bartolozzi was a Founder Member of the Royal Academy who served as engraver to the King for almost 40 years. He engraved works by several of his fellow Royal Academicians, including Angelica Kauffman, Benjamin West and Joshua Reynolds. From the painting by Carlo Dolci (1616 – 1686). Dolci was the most important Florentine painter of the 17th century. He entered the studio of Jacopo Vignali in about 1625, and his prodigious output secured him a high reputation from an early age. By the 1640s demand for his work had grown to such an extent that he often repeated compositions. Although most of his work is of religious subjects, he also painted portraits, including some sitters from England, where his reputation was high. Published by John Boydell (1719 – 1804).
