Authentic Mexican Retablo (oil on tin painting) featuring El Alma de Maria–a classical composition of the Virgin Mary’s spirit at the time of the Annunciation. Some also refer to this version as “La Virgen de la Paloma” or The Virgin of the Dove. Although the subject is somewhat common, the quality of this piece is extremely rare. Excellent condition and easily considered museum quality. The white dove in the center represents her holy spirit or soul. The white lilies in her hand and chaplet of roses on her head represent her virginity and purity. The Virgin is often referred to as the “lily among thorns” or the rose without thorns. The green palm in her other hand represents her victory over death. As her body was assumed into Heaven. Also featuring anti-crepuscular rays emanating from her head in bright yellow and red. The deep blue clothing and bright white clouds provide unique depth to the composition. Has been professionally stored and authenticated. History: Retablos are a type of folk art that features traditional religious beliefs from the Mexican culture. Devotional retablos of holy images were painted on sheets of tin and displayed in family altars.
