Fairy in Floral Landscape. Attributed to Charles François Pécrus. Fine quality 19th century English oil painting on canvas. 1850 English romantic oil depicting the rare subject of a fairy floating through a landscape surrounded by wildflowers and with a floral garland around her head. The work is beautifully painted and very delicate. A lovely subject and very decorative. Title: Fairy in Floral Landscape. Signature: No visible signature. Medium: Oil on canvas. Provenance: Private London collection. Size: 26 x 17 inches unframed. 1980 – a little old retouching. The painting is in good condition for its age – though there are scratches and few stains to the surface. The painting is not framed but it still look beautiful hanging by itself. Although there is no visible signature, it is attributed to Charles François Pécrus, who was a pupil of Fichel and Javet. Regardless of the authenticity, clearly it was made by an artist who painted at the level of the masters of his time. Perhaps being done by one of them, this painting deserves further research. About Charles François Pécrus. Pécrus’ work can be separated into two very distinct periods. Initially, he painted interior and genre scenes in the Louis XIII style (his small painting Day Before the Wedding was bought at the Salon of 1865 for 2,000 francs by Napoleon III). Then, after a few notable portraits, he turned to landscapes, seascapes, mythical creatures and animals. In this he was probably influenced by Diaz, Jongkind and above all Boudin, who held him in high esteem and owned some of his works, which he bequeathed to the museum of Honfleur. He exhibited genre paintings at the Salon de Paris from 1857 to 1905. Museum and Gallery Holdings. Cherbourg: View of Holland. Honfleur: Portrait of Mme Eugène Boudin; Portrait of Mme Sporck. Limoges: The Vauban Basin, Le Havre. New York Picture Gal. Paris (Louvre): Sailing-boat in a Harbour. Pontoise: Steamboat in a Harbour. Rheims: Woman Wearing a Bracelet; Young Musician.
