Very beautiful, late 19th century rendering in watercolor of the mid-fifteenth century painting by Filippo Lippi, Madonna and Child. The image is the Italian Renaissance painting of Filippo Lippi — his most famous piece which is now in the Uffizi in Florence. It has been faithfully copied in very fine watercolor work. The color washes are clean and clear in perfect, warm and subdued tones, and the brushwork is meticulous and delicate. This is unsigned, but surely either Italian or French. Exactly as first painted by Lippi, the Virgin is elegantly dressed, with a crown of pearls and veils woven into her hair. Her expression is gentle and almost melancholy, as if she can foresee the painful destiny that awaits her son. The halos above the heads of the Virgin and Child are barely hinted at: circular and translucent rays of light creating an aura of blessed serenity. The frame is a work of art in itself and is a loving compliment to the painting. Angels look down from the cornice and, in the scrolling form of the base, a Latin cross stands radiating in the center. The burnished gilding displays some red undertones in the pale gold. The painting is in excellent condition with only one small area of damage: In the upper right, some paint has flaked away from the surface. This appears as a dark spot which is about 3/16 of an inch in diameter. There is no mildew or foxing and no soil. The painting is framed under old glass which has no bubbles, but minor waviness. The frame has had some careful restoration done which did not attempt to completely hide the damage. This does not at all detract from the beauty of this wonderful, antique piece. The gilding, which is over gesso, has shrunken and cracked in places, but is stable. The item “Orig.
