This is a profound and masterful RARE Antique Modern French Surrealist Expressionist Oil Painting on canvas, by the important early French Surrealist painter Jean Janin 1899 – 1970. This work depicts the Biblical destruction of ancient Sodom & Gomorrah, and central to this scene is Lot’s wife, who looked back at the destruction and was turned into a Pillar of Salt by God. Surrounding her are two fearful looking angels in the top right, and several groups of people and animals fleeing for their lives in sheer terror and awe at the mighty wrath of God. This is one of the most powerful artistic renditions of the biblical event that I have ever seen, or probably ever will in the future. Approximately 31 3/8 x 37 3/8 inches including frame. Actual artwork is approximately 25 x 31 inches. Signed: “Jean Janin” in the lower right corner. This work approximately dates to the 1920’s – 1930’s. Good condition for age, with very fine craquelure throughout please see photos. This work has never been published or shown before, and ranks among the very best of Janin’s artistic output. Jean Janin was born in 1898, in Geneva, Switzerland, to French parents; he was a painter and a designer. His paintings were of scenes with Art Deco and surreal figures, often with allegorical themes, he also designed stage sets and wall decorations. Janin trained at the art school in Geneva, then at the Académie Ranson in Paris. In 1923 began to exhibit in Paris at the main annual salons. In 1929, he and the American William Gwinn founded the Children’s Traveling Theater. He did a great deal of decorative work and produced screens, lacquer panels and mosaics for Poissy town hall. He also designed several posters in the 1920s. He belonged, with artist Pierre Ino, to a group of young Surrealists. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”.
