Original Antique Maps and Prints. Description: From a series of 4 depicting the 4 elements. Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after Hendrik Goltzius. Goltzius was a Dutch printmaker, draftsman and painter. He was the leading painter of Northern Mannerism. Goltzius had a malformed right hand from a fire when he was a baby which turned out to be especially well-suited to holding the burin. Some 388 prints are credited to him by Hollstein. Subject: Antique print, titled:’Aqua’, Allegory of Water. The central, nude female figure stands beside an overturned jug, from which the river flows. In the background Christ is baptised by John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit descending in the form of a dove. Captioned: Undosus, latique maris circumfluus humor. Ultima possedit, solidumque coercuit orbem – The wavy fluid of the great sea flows all around. It rules on the farthest and surrounds the globe. Condition: Very good, given age. A stain in the top of the image, and in the caption below the image (extending a little into the image). Please study scan carefully. Size (in cm): The overall size is ca. 16.4 x 22 cm.
