Antique American Schoolgirl Sampler Religious About Health Mary Leyland
I have been collecting beautiful ANTIQUE AMERICAN SCHOOLGIRL SAMPLERS for over 20 years. This listing is for a beautiful sampler stitched mostly in taupe shades except for the verse which is stitched in black. I was very drawn to the neutral tones. The sampler is meticulously stitched with a very detailed border and fine motifs beneath the verse. It is interesting that Mary chose to fill the space in the second line by continuing to stitch numbers up to 14. The verse contains a couple of misspellings which add to the innocence of the young sampler maker who stitched it so long ago. The verse reads as follows. Health a kind gift from heaven sent. When added to a mind content. What is grandour Power or wealth. All fleeting nothing without health. For happiness we search in vain. Kings subjects all alike complain. In virtue let thy time be spent. And to be happy be content. Life’s but a trial be resin’d. In heav’n alone true bliss thoul find. Below the verse the sampler is stitched. This sampler is in fine condition with the exception of some staining near the top left. There are no visible holes or thread loss. This piece was represented as being from the early 1840s but I do not know more than that about the piece or the sampler maker. The frame is very old with some lovely details. The framed sampler measures 17-3/4″ tall x 15-1/2″ wide and is ready for hanging. I did have a new backing put on the sampler but the frame is the same one that came with the sampler. Please look at the photos for up-close details. Happy to answer any questions. Thank you for looking!
