This 1800s Swedish immigrant trunk measures 31.25″L x 19.5″H x 16D, and features a full-color hand-painted religious-inspired scene underneath the lid. The dome lid has a long crack in the center, running all the way across. It was repaired long, long ago with three rustic steel belt brackets on the underside, which were cleverly incorporated into the painting via the three crosses. Each cross has a different phrase written on it, the first reads something like, “be obedient to death, even next to death of the cross”, which is from Philippians 2:8, the second might read something like, “in this story/text you will owe”. I can’t decipher the last cross, and can’t read or speak Swedish, so these are very rough translations. In the background is a village with people walking in lines toward the crosses. In addition to the impressive oval-shaped landscape, there is a smaller painting of a cherub below on the rear inner wall, and the entire interior of the trunk was painted a baby blue. The exterior has some hand-painted lettering on the back side, but it’s too faded to make anything out. The trunk’s keyhole lock is missing (latch portion is still intact inside lid), one rear hinge is slightly bent (still works fine) and the lid hinge was replaced sometime in the last 30 years or so (see photos for details). The trunk is very sturdy, drawers and lids work well, and everything aside from the lid’s lock hinge is original. Interior and exterior show considerable wear and tear from age and use, so please inspect the detailed photos to grade condition.
