This is an antique Chinese bronze bird-form incense burner (also known as a censer). It measures 7″ x 7″ x 3. It is cast in the charming form of a bird, with detailed wings that serve as a removable cover for the incense receptacle Somewhere along the way. A small bolt was added to secure the cover onto the main part of the bird. The ornate, swirling patterns on the wings and body are typical of Chinese decorative arts from the Qing dynasty (18th-19th century). When in use, fragrant smoke would rise from an aperture, historically creating the impression of a living creature surrounded by mist. Incense burners of this quality were functional items that also served as a source of inspiration and a symbol of refinement in East Asian culture.
