This exceptionally emotional late 1600’s-middle 1700’s oil on canvas measures 25 3/4″ x 21 1/8″ framed; 21 1/4″ x 15 5/8″ actual and depicts the suffering Savior set against a dark background with dramatic lighting accentuating elements of his face and body. The work has pronounced overall (stable) craquelure and 19th century relining mounted on an 18th century rack with mitered corners. The original support is a coarse textured homespun linen evident in some of the areas with thinner paint application. Its surface is fairly clean with scattered small areas of inpaint in the background, His shoulder, temple and nose (all quite small). The present frame is 20th century European with Florentine finish bronze metal leafs, red bole ground and natural dark wood inner frame.
