Very old painting of’The infant St John with a lamb’. After Bartolome Esteban Murillo. There is an embossed name on the frame that says’Young Gower St, London’. Served the Slade School of Art, which had opened in 1871. He was preceded at 137 Gower St by J. Hirst-Smyth & Son in 1881 and, like Hirst-Smyth, initially described himself in listings as’publisher, depot for supplying the Slade School of Art with english and foreign artists’ materials’. He advertised as being immediately opposite University College. The Year’s Art. This appears to be the supplier of the stretcher. The paint appears to go over the top and around the frame suggesting it may be older than late 1800’s and possibly remounted. There is various damage to the painting including a few tears/ holes and a few patches including missing paint and small crackling. I have spoken to restorer who suggested local repairs and repainting where there is paint loss. Size 81cm x 46cm.
