Authentic Mexican Retablo (oil on copper painting) featuring San Luis Rey (King Louis IX of France). He’s credited with bringing the true crown of thorns and three nails to France, which can be seen in the lower, left-hand corner. They’re still enshrined outside of Paris. The iconography is particularly important; he had a scepter that ended in the blessing hand and the French fleur de lis on his royal robe. The pure white ermine fur represented never having sinned with its black tail representing original sin. They say that you can tell an accomplished portrait painter by the hands, and these are expressive and very delicately painted. Copper retablos are rare, and any retablo of San Luis Rey is extremely rare. Has been professionally stored and authenticated. History: Retablos are a type of folk art that features traditional religious beliefs from the Mexican culture.
