Antique French Carved Walnut Religious Crucifix Frame Signed G. Made in the Victorian era circa 18501870. Superb religious devotional carved walnut frame with putto/cherub, draped swags with various instruments and a Bishops/Abbots mitre on top with armorial shield. This frame would of probably had a carved crucifix of Christ attached or similar devotional object/relic. Has a nice aged worn patina showing through, appears to be walnut. The frame is all entirely hand carved and bears the signature of G. SEGAUDin three places, twice above the puttos head and one at the top below the sheild. This has seen service for a great number of years and there are old repairs and restoration with old worm holes etc, etc… Condition is overall good there are a couple pieces that have been broken and re-attached at some point. (lower putto’s wing and left side top “scroll” at 9’o’ clock if looking when hung). On the opposite side (at 3’o’ clock) a piece has been totally replaced (top scroll). This is an old repair. The sheild at the back and couple of other areas on the reverse have old worm damage. The mitre has small chip on point. All said this is a rare find and is very solid and sturdy. It displays with exceptional presence as the photos show. It has been in service and loved for at least 140 years and has wear and tear commensurate with its age and use. Stunning when displayed from all angles.. Collection is preferred but will post. 26.5″tall by 23″across with. A depth of 3.5. Weighs 2.591 kilos unwrapped.
