Antique Santos Cage Doll- Religious Statuary- Artist Doll
Antique Santos Cage Doll- Religious Statuary- Artist Doll. Serene and beautiful antique Santos cage doll. Lovely doll body and cage bottom. Made of all wood- I believe poplar, though I’m not positive, she has the original iron shoulder nails and stands 28 1/2” tall. The base is approximately 10 1/4” in diameter. Her arms are articulated from the shoulder. She is in found condition with very chippy patina and is handpainted. You can see the layers of paint and early plaster/ Gesso. As with all Santos dolls, she has a serene and peaceful look on her face. As you can see, she is in found and antique state… Lots of chippy paint, wear, age, etc. Her left shoulder looks a touch loose to me. She is sturdy but should be handled with care. Please use zoom feature on all the pictures for condition details and to make your own determination of age. History: Santos Dolls were traditionally made for Catholic altars. The Santos dolls take their name from the Spanish word for Saint, and are also known as Santons (French) and Santibelli (Italian). The Santos that started the genre of dolls we currently represent (primarily Spanish Colonial and Western European style), were originally started as copies of 17th-century carvings by priests. Originally, Santos were created for use as in-home altars. They were needed in small villages that did not have a priest, as well as for when it was not possible to travel to church, such as during times of war. Their development flourished in Europe in the 1700’s and 1800’s, primarily due to these wars. The dolls were used to aid in the of conversion of the Native Americans and Central American Indians to Catholicism. Santos dolls are designed and created by “Santeros” or “Santonniers” (loosely’saint maker’). As the art form has progressed, the Santos has become recognized as a true artistic doll.
