This is a beautiful and exquisitely detailed French Meerschaum sculpture. It was made in the 1800s and has been in my family for four generations. The word “meerschaum” refers to the sepiolite from which it was carved. It is framed in ebonized wood and placed under curved glass. The condition of the sculpture is excellent. There is some small chips on the frame. (please see pictures) There are some minute scratches on the glass that would not capture on camera. Important: Please note that some masking tape was carefully added to the back. I would therefore consider this piece to be modified. (see picture for detail) This tape does not show from the front or side. Measurement from across outside of frame – approximately 9 inches. Measurement straight across inside of glass – approximately 7 inches. Depth (distance top of glass is from back of frame) – approximately 1.5 inches.
