Condition overall is good. The following minor issues have been noted: Back shows rust; there are 4 nail holes one on each side close to the center; some paint loss on surface; there are tiny chips on paint but do not stand out. Please examine photos closely. This sale includes the exhibition catalog. Retablo Art is religious art, i. The vast iconography and imagery that attempts to depict Heaven, Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and the saints brought over by the Spanish colonizers, resulted in folk versions known today as “Retablo Art”, a genre all its own. Originally a retablo was a statue or painting of of a canonized saint, the assigned patron and protector of the “pueblo”, “municipio” or “parroquia”. It was a significant part of the altar, even its center piece. Later on the practice evolved to include the painting of images to honor and thank particular saints to whom the devotee attributed his or her life changing miracle. This type of painting was specially referred to as “ex-voto”. It was commissioned or if he has the ability, the beneficiary painted the image himself.
