1915 oil on canvas housed in a MASSIVE ornate gilt gesso and wood frame of the same period measures a most impressive 36 ½ x 46 ½ (framed); 30 x 40 actual. I see no signature. A masterful allegory of the Holy Eucharist or First Communion, Christ is shown displaying a consecrated host; a golden Chalice stands on the draped table behind Him. Eleven of the apostles kneel in a semi-circle before Him as the 12th, Judas Iscariot, sneaks out a door at the back of the room. The finely rendered details and convincing sense of architectural space mark this canvas as the work of an accomplished academically trained painter. The only clue to its origins is the studio label for The Raab Studio/Ecclesiastical Artists Since 1890Chicago and the name Albert J. The work has been forgotten in storage for DECADES and is VERY dirty with stable paint. There is a tiny tear with minor loss in one of the kneeling apostles eyes. Its frame is beautifully preserved with original bronze powder and gold metal leaf finish and only the most minor losses.
