The subject of this icon is the warrior saint Demetrios of Salonika defeating the’king of the infidels’, Kaloyan of Bulgaria. This icon is painted in the provincial Popular Tradition, akin to folk art, extant in many areas of Greece throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries during the time of Ottoman rule. The workshop which produced this icon probably catered mainly to pilgrims and devout peasants yet the naive quality of the work has still managed to instill character into the figures.
