RARE Antique 18th c. Old Master Mexican Spanish Colonial Oil Painting, WOW
This is a profound and spiritual Antique 18th c. Old Master Mexican Spanish Colonial Oil Painting on canvas, mounted on wood, depicting a serene Catholic female saint in a flowing black gown. A gilded corona of holy luminescence surrounds her head, and she is flanked by two very tall lit candles on both sides. Hanging from her body is a long chain of rosary beads, with a prominent crucifix. The attention to detail in this painting is remarkable, and reflects the mastery of early Mexican painters during the Spanish Colonial era. This work approximately dates to the mid to late 1700’s. I do not know the identity of the woman depicted, but perhaps you recognize this religious figure? This work is unsigned, but so are the majority of the masterworks that came out of this incredible artistic movement. This painting is on canvas, and appears to have been mounted to wood sometime in the last 50 years. This was likely to preserve the artwork, as canvases this old are very fragile. Good condition overall, with spots of paint loss, edge wear, and fine craquelure that is customary with almost any nearly 300 year old painting, especially one that was for devotional use. Acquired from the contents of an old family’s collection in San Juan Capistrano, California. Approximately: 20 x 24 5/8 inches. Please check my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks! What is Spanish colonial art? Spanish colonial art includes paintings, sculptures and decorative objects produced across one and a half continents, from Mexico down to South America, over a period of about 330 years. Artworks produced in Brazil during this period are referred to as Portuguese colonial art. All art and objects from this region that precede Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the New World in 1492, marking the beginning of the European conquest, are termed pre-Columbian. The Spanish colonial period ends around 1820, when Spain began to lose its grip on its colonies in the New World and independence was won by many of today’s Latin American nations. What does Spanish colonial art look like? Because of its incredibly broad scope, Spanish colonial art cannot be defined by any one particular style, subject or form. One can find a preponderance of depictions of Virgins and saints, attesting to the spread of Catholicism in the region, but often these come with a distinctly regional flavour.
