Rare 100 yrs European Torah Scroll Fragment parchment Deuteronomy The Holidays
Rare 100yr European Torah Scroll Fragment Deuteronomy. This rare manuscript, approximately 100 years old, originated in Europe and was brought to Israel after the Holocaust. It is a magnificent piece representing Jewish history and the sacred art of STaM (Torah scribal calligraphy). A truly exceptional and rare feature of this fragment is the beautiful 5-point Tagin (crowns) adorning the tops of certain letters-a highly uncommon scribal tradition rarely seen in Torah scrolls. This fragment is highly valued for its beautiful natural patina and outstanding calligraphy. Biblical Content: Deuteronomy 15:9 – 17:3 (The Holidays). This magnificent fragment features two columns of text and encompasses several central themes regarding society, festivals, justice, and the worship of God. Charity and Kindness: The commandment to lend to the poor, with a strict prohibition against being tight-fisted or withholding loans out of fear of the approaching Shmita (Sabbatical) year, when debts are cancelled. Laws of the Hebrew Slave: The commandment to free a Hebrew slave or maidservant in the seventh year, and the obligation to provide them generously with gifts and property upon their release. Firstborn Kosher Animals: The commandment to consecrate the firstborn of cattle and flocks to God, along with the prohibition against working them or shearing their wool. The Three Pilgrimage Festivals: Extensive details regarding the laws of Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot, including the commandment of pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the obligation to rejoice during the holidays. Judges and Justice (Beginning of Parashat Shoftim): The obligation to appoint judges and officers in every city, a severe warning against taking bribes or perverting justice, and the famous decree: Justice, justice you shall pursue. Prohibition of Idolatry: The prohibition of planting an Asherah tree or setting up a sacred pillar, the invalidation of sacrificing a blemished animal, and the severe punishments for worshipping idols, the sun, the moon, or the host of heaven. Physical Characteristics & Condition. Material: Handwritten on authentic, white calf parchment. The parchment has developed a beautiful, natural patina over the last century, typical of historical scrolls from European Jewish communities. Dimensions: Approximately 38 cm in height and 30 cm in width. 15 x 11.8 inches. The Script: The Hebrew calligraphy is exceptionally clear and prominent. The ink is well-preserved on the parchment, making the text highly legible. Condition: Considering the scroll’s age and history, it is in good condition. There are some letters where the ink is cracked, along with typical age-related wear, which only adds to its authentic character and antique charm. (Please review the attached photos for a detailed look). A Rare Holocaust-Era Heritage Piece. Holding a Torah scroll fragment that survived the turbulent history of 20th-century Europe-complete with rare scribal crowns-is a profound opportunity. This manuscript serves as a tangible link to a lost world and will make a spectacular centerpiece for any home or library. It is an ideal family heirloom, allowing future generations to develop a deep, unmediated appreciation for the biblical text and Jewish heritage.
