Antique Hand-carved Wooden Praying Virgin Mary Madonna Statue On Detachable Base
ANTIQUE HAND-CARVED WOODEN PRAYING VIRGIN MARY MADONNA STATUE ON DETACHABLE BASE. A beautiful and stately antique European hand-carved wooden religious sculpture depicting a praying Virgin Mary (Madonna). This classic piece of ecclesiastical craftsmanship features a deeply expressive, serene facial expression with Mary’s hands elegantly folded in prayer, draped in long, flowing traditional robes and a cascading head covering. The statue is carved from solid wood with a wonderful, rich natural wood grain and a warm honey-toned patina. It stands on a separate, matching turned wooden plinth base that features old stamped initials (“S D M”) on top and houses a central metal securing pin. An authentic, atmospheric devotional center piece perfect for any collection, niche, or home altar. Condition & Points of Interest. Gorgeous solid antique condition with a deep, silky natural patina. The wood shows honest, historical signs of age that enhance its character. Objectively noted, the piece has suffered an impact blow in its past (visible primarily on the left/back side when viewed from the front). There are several historical shrinkage cracks in the wood and a distinct vertical split through the circular wooden pedestal. These have been structurally stabilized and repaired; they are minimally visible from the front display profile and do not detract from the beauty or stability of the statue. The sculpture can be detached from its octagonal-turned base via an integrated iron mounting pin. The underside of the base is flat, clean, and solid. Total Height (on base). 38.5 cm / 15.16 inches. 10.6 cm / 4.17 inches. No expense will be spared on packaging materials. DESCRIPTION, AND IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION, I WILL BE LIKE TO HELP YOU. Relics (Latin: reliquiae) are remains that are venerated within certain religions. The veneration of relics plays an important role, particularly in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christianity, as well as in Hinduism and Buddhism. Within some branches of Islam, relic veneration plays a certain role, but within other branches, it is rejected as idolatry. Within Roman Catholicism, relics refer to the remains of the bodies of saints or objects that have been in contact with the body of Jesus, Mary, or another saint. Such objects are classified into three categories, in order of importance. First-degree relics: bodies or body parts of deceased saints. Second-degree relics: objects that were in contact with Christ or a saint during their lifetime clothing, footwear, utensils, etc. ; Third-degree relics: objects that have been in contact with Christ or a saint after their death the Holy Lance, shrouds, earth from a grave, etc. The veneration of relics can be traced back to the early Christian custom of celebrating the liturgy above or near the grave of martyrs, for example in the catacombs in Rome. When churches were later built on or near the graves of martyrs, the custom arose of placing relics in the altar. This custom still exists in Catholic churches. If an altar is desecrated, the relic is sent back to the bishop. In the past, miraculous powers were attributed to the relics of saints. They were believed to be able to act as a’channel’ of divine power (the deceased saints therefore do not perform these miracles themselves). Relics of a saint are often offered for veneration on the saint’s feast day. In some places, the faithful come forward after Mass to kiss a reliquary containing the relic. [1] In Lier (Saint Gummarus) and Bruges (Holy Blood), processions take place, accompanied by extensive festivities. In other places, such as Aachen, Kornelimünster, Susteren, Maastricht and Huy, seven-yearly pilgrimages to the shrine are organized, often based on centuries-old traditions. During the rest of the year, the relics are kept in the sacristy or in a secure storage place, sometimes under the care of a brotherhood dedicated to the devotion to this saint. Relics related to Christ. The relics of the Holy Cross. The Holy Blood of Christ. The Shroud of Turin. The Holy Tunic of Trier. The Sudarium of Oviedo. The Cloth of Edessa. The Cloth of the Virgin Mary. The bones of the holy apostles Peter and Paul in Rome. The uncorrupted body of Saint Bernadette of Lourdes.
