17th Century Italian or Spanish Santo Large Polychromed Figure of Saint George
17th Century Italian or Spanish Santo Large Polychromed Figure of Saint George. 17th Century Italian or Spanish or possibly Spanish-American (Colonial Latin American) Santo Large Polychromed Wood Figure of Saint George. This is a beautifully and finely carved large sculpture with remnants of polychrome paint on it. The figure is dressed like a Roman Soldier, which is usually how Saint George is depicted, as he was a Roman soldier. This figure is missing his shield and his sword. This may be either a Spanish or Spanish-American sculpture or an Italian sculpture from the 17th century or early 18th century. The figure has very finely made realistic glass eyes. Some of the details on the legs are added with gesso that has then been painted over. Saint George or George of Lydda, d. April 23, 303 was a Christian who is venerated as a saint in Christianity. According to tradition he was a soldier in the Roman army. Saint George was a soldier of Cappadocian Greek origin and member of the Praetorian Guard for Roman emperor Diocletian, who was sentenced to death for refusing to recant his Christian faith. He became one of the most venerated saints in Christianity, and the patron saint of several kingdoms, cities, etc. He is most well-known as the Patron Saint of England. Condition: Condition is commensurate with age and use. It is very old, with a lovely patina, and has old termite holes, scuffs and cracks. There are no termites currently- has been in my house for about a year, no termite dust. Figure is missing sword and shield, legs have cracks and are wobbly and need additional support to stand.
